This lecture explores in detail both the theoretical, and crucially, the practical implications of the presentation of past eras of conflict, controversy, and oppression in the context of a museum for 21st century audiences. Using actual works of art and their presentation as case studies, Dr. Bailey will situate his perspectives within the larger historical context of international expositions and fairs, touching especially on modern Japan, his area of expertise. This presentation and subsequent conversation will also give students insight into the many challenges of presenting non-Western art to American audiences.
