Associate Professor Teresa Hubbard (B.F.A., Studio Art, 1988) and partner Alexander Birchler, were included in the October issue of Texas Monthly. The article entitled, "Straight from the Art" discusses the art boom in Texas, and Hubbard is included with a group of 12 other movers and shakers in the Texas art world.

Bailey Receives Distinguished Book Award

This past spring Sally Bailey, MFA, MSW, RDT/BCT (UT BFA 1976) was promoted to full professor at Kansas State University where she has taught theater and directed the drama therapy program for the past 11 years.  Her recent book "Barrier-Free Theatre: Including Everyone in Theatre Arts -- In Schools, Recreation, and Arts Program -- Regardless of (Dis)Abililty" was awarded the 2011 Distinguished Book Award by the American Alliance for Theatre in Education in Chicago at its annual conference in July.  "Barrier-Free Theatre" is published by Idyll Arbor, Inc.

Mali Vargas Docktor (B.F.A., Studio Art, 2000)

Mali Vargas Docktor (B.F.A., Studio Art, 2000) will have an exhibition, Chromatone, at Evanescence Gallery during the month of September. The opening reception will be from 6-9pm on Friday, September 2nd. Chromatone is an inviting journey through color. Docktor combines formal abstraction with modern expressionism in her latest series of intensely colorful paintings as she seeks to explore the emotive effects of color.

Docktor’s work entitled Sporadic Growth was chosen by the jury to be included in the Artists Choice exhibition organized by the Alberta Society of Artists. Only 21 artworks were selected for the exhibition. The Artists Choice exhibition will be exhibited at the Alberta Society of Artists Gallery At Lougheed House in Calgary, AB from August 31- October 30, 2011.

Jennifer Remenchik (BFA Studio Art, 2009)

Red Space Gallery is pleased to present an opening reception for Jennifer Remenchik (BFA Studio Art, 2009) and her exhibition Goal. Goal explores stories of glory and disappointment in athletics.  Remenchik presents works in various media that play with the notion of the athlete’s body as a scene of drama and investigates how sports’ narratives relate to the values of our everyday lives.  The reception will take place from 7-10pm on August 27th, 2011.
 

Thao Votang (B.A., 2008, Art History)

Thao Votang (B.A., 2008, Art History), along with Brian Willey are opening Tiny Park, a new exhibition series and art space located at 607 1/2 Genard Street in Austin, TX. Their first exhibition will open on Friday, September 9 from 7-11 pm and feature works by Miguel Aragon (current M.F.A. student).

Aragon’s work was recently included in New Art in Austin: 15 to Watch at the Austin Museum of Art. Miguel will present works from a series that addresses, with a quiet and ghostly beauty, the violent drug war in Juarez.

The exhibition runs through September 24, 2011, and will be available for viewing 12 pm - 5 pm on Saturdays and by appointment.

Rebecca Hewett (M.A. 2004, Ph.D. 2010) has been awarded a 2011 American Council of Learned Societies (ACLS) Public Fellow at the New York City Department of Cultural Affairs (DCLA) as a Cultural Programs Specialist. The Public Fellows program is an ACLS initiative placing recent Ph.D.s in staff positions at partnering agencies in government and the non-profit sector, aiming to demonstrate that the capacities developed in the advanced study of the humanities have wide application, both within and beyond.
