Chappell Ellison receives Winterhouse Award for Design Writing and Criticism

Recent UT Design Division graduate Chappell Ellison (B.F.A. Design, 2007) received the prestigious 2009 Winterhouse Award for Design Writing and Criticism for her essay, “Compulsion: Where Object Meets Anxiety.” After graduating from UT, Ellison worked at web and graphic design companies before migrating to her current home in Manhattan. She is now an M.F.A. student in the inaugural class of the Design Criticism program at the School of Visual Arts.

will be featured in an upcoming exhibition at Syracuse University entitled, Intermissions, which places video art and photographs at multiple venues across Syracuse, making it accessible to the general community and creating many opportunities for meaningful interaction with the work.

Mark Schatz (M.F.A. Studio Art, 2005) will be exhibiting his work in the Lawndale Art Center’s 30th Anniversary Exhibition in Houston, Texas.

Bruce Radek (B.M., M.M., Applied Music/Voice/Piano, '78, '80)

has recently completed the inaugural US Courts, Federal Judiciary IT Fellowship in Washington, D.C. He has also been accepted into the CIO Certificate Program at the National Defense University, and is co-chair of the Attracting Talent National CIO IT Workforce sub-committee for the Federal IT 2009 Summit. This fall, he will pursue full-time Entertainment Law and Mediation Services in Nashville, TN. Currently, Bruce represents several national jazz and country music artists and bands, and plans to expand his artist list to symphonic performers and violin artists.

Steve Baldwin (Ph.D., '89)

As a doctoral graduate under Dr. Oscar G. Brockett, Dr. Steve Baldwin co-produced, researched and wrote “A Journey Through Deaf Texas,” which premiered on June 11, 2009 at UTSA-Downtown Campus in San Antonio. The 54-minute documentary covers the feats. failures and leadership of the Texas Association of the Deaf (TAD). Baldwin, a resident of Austin, developed the film with David Pierce of Davideo Productions of Seguin. In 1990 they both won the Barbara Jordan Award for a mini-documentary.

Mary Ellen Cavitt (Ph.D., '98)

has received the Presidential Award for Excellence in Teaching for the College of Fine Arts and Communications at Texas State University, San Marcos. Dr. Cavitt also earned tenure this spring at Texas State University and serves as an Associate Professor of Music Education.
