Associate Dean of UTeach Fine Arts Associate Professor

Roxanne Schroeder-Arce (she/her) is Associate Dean of UTeach Fine Arts (Fine Arts Education), which means she works with faculty and students in teacher certification programs in art, music dance, and theatre. She is also Associate Professor of Theatre Education in the Department of Theatre & Dance. As well as being an administrator and teacher, Roxanne is an artist-scholar and arts advocate. Her plays for young audiences, including Mariachi Girl and Yana Wana’s Legend of the Bluebonnet, are published by Dramatic Publishing. She has published articles in journals such as Youth Theatre Journal, International Journal for Education & the Arts, Nakum Jounral, and Theatre Topics and chapters in books including Latinos and American Popular Culture and Nerds, Goths, Geeks, and Freaks: Outsiders in Chicanx/Latinx Young Adult Literature.

She taught high-school theatre in both Laredo and Austin, Texas for a total of six years and served as artistic and education director of TEATRO Humanidad in Austin for several years before moving into higher education. She also taught theatre education and directed mainstage and touring productions for young people at Emerson College and California State University at Fresno before joining the faculty at the University of Texas at Austin. Roxanne is on the Board of Directors of Teatro Vivo and the Board of elders of the Indigenous Cultures Institute. She is a cadre member of the Center for Educator Development in the Fine Arts and was on the writing committee for the Texas Essential Knowledge and Skills. Roxanne earned her bachelors degree from Emerson College and her masters of fine arts degree right here at The University of Texas at Austin. A proud first generation college student and graduate, she also benefited from the Keene State College Upward Bound Program in Keene, New Hampshire. Roxanne grew up in Springfield, Vermont.
