Fine Arts Diversity Council adds new student members, creates new Student Advisory Board group

Tuesday, September 14, 2021

In spring 2021, the Fine Arts Diversity Council (FADC) shared an open call for applications to all students in the College of Fine Arts to join the council. After receiving a robust slate of applicants, the council chose four students to serve on the council and decided to create a new Student Advisory Board to expand opportunities for students to participate in diversity, equity and inclusion efforts in the College of Fine Arts.

The new student members of the Fine Arts Diversity Council include

  • Giana Blazquez, graduate student in the Department of Theatre and Dance
  • Anderson Dean, undergraduate student in the Department of Art and Art History
  • Maricella Kaples, undergraduate student in the School of Design and Creative Technologies
  • Marina Sakellakis, graduate student in the Butler School of Music

As members of the FADC, these students will attend monthly meetings and share their perspectives and opinions. They will also attend meetings of the Student Advisory Board and serve as a liaison between the FADC Student Advisory Board and the FADC committee members at large. They will also be expected to participate in at least one FADC working group. Student members of FADC will be compensated with a project grant in the spring semester that they may use toward completing academic research and practice.

The new members of the Student Advisory Board include

  • Laura Aldana, undergraduate in the Butler School of Music
  • Yunina Barbour-Payne, graduate student in the Department of Theatre and Dance
  • Kennedy Cannon, undergraduate in the Department of Theatre and Dance
  • Kassandra Caracheo, undergraduate in the Department of Art and Art History
  • Michael DeWhatley, graduate student in the Department of Theatre and Dance
  • Andrea Hart, graduate student in the Department of Theatre and Dance
  • Harri Horsley, graduate student in the Department of Theatre and Dance
  • Fallon Jones, undergraduate student in the School of Design and Creative Technologies
  • Carlos Moreno, undergraduate in the Department of Art and Art History
  • Kristen Osborn, graduate student in the Department of Theatre and Dance
  • Olivia Phaneuf, graduate student in the Butler School of Music
  • Natalia Rivera, undergraduate student in the Department of Art and Art History
  • Simone Thomas, undergraduate in the Department of Theatre and Dance
  • Grayson Willis, undergraduate in the Department of Art and Art History

The new Student Advisory Board will convene for the first time this fall. The board will meet three times each semester and give voice to questions, concerns and interests of the COFA student population. Members will also have the option to participate in a Fine Arts Diversity Council working group.

The Fine Arts Diversity Council was formed in 2012 as the Fine Arts Diversity Committee. With faculty, staff and student representatives from across the College of Fine Arts, the committee created the college’s first strategic diversity plan and has worked to implement that plan and support diversity, equity and inclusion initiatives in the college.
