Gloria Groom receives the Chevalier Légion d’Honneur

Gloria Groom (M.A. 1978; Ph.D., Art History, 1989), chair of the Art Institute of Chicago’s European Painting and Sculpture department in 2015, received the distinction of the Chevalier Légion d’Honneur on April 29. The highest of the five levels of the French government’s Légion d’Honneur award, the French Ambassador to the United States, Gérard Araud presented the award during a private ceremony. The award honors Groom for her contributions to French art and culture.

Hai Zheng releases sixth album

Cellist Hai Zheng (B.M. 1988; M.M., Applied Music/Voice/Piano, 1990) Assistant Professor of Music and Artist in Residence at Southwestern University, released in May her sixth CD, Remembrance on the Amatius Classics label. The CD is her second album with her longtime pianist, Kiyoshi Tamagawa (D.M.A., Applied Music/Voice/Piano, 1988), Associate Dean and Professor of Music at Southwestern University, and celebrates their 20th season of performing.

Hollie Berry chosen to create painting for 75th anniversary of Iroquois Steeplechase

The Iroquois Steeplechase selected Hollie Berry (B.F.A., Studio Art, 2009) to create its official painting for the 75th anniversary, Endurance, which reflects the iconic race and will be available for purchase in the nonprofit’s annual online auction. The painting will be reproduced in posters commemorating the event as well as on the covers of the race day programs in the hands of the approximately 25,000 annual attendees. Endurance, as well as other steeplechasing inspired paintings, will be on display at the Williamson County Archives in Franklin, Tennessee from May 6-14. 

Kyle Kennedy named Head of Acting at Middle Tennessee State University

Kyle Kennedy (M.F.A., Drama, 1993) was recently named Head of Acting at Middle Tennessee State University where he serves on the acting area advisory board for the Southeastern Theatre Conference. His students have gone on to work in major theatrical venues across the country. Kennedy was recently seen as "Serebrayakov" in MTSU's production of Uncle Vanya. He continues to act regionally and is a frequent company member at Cortland Repertory Theatre in Upstate New York.
